Japanese Switch demand at critical mass, stores begin holding lotteries

Finding it hard to buy a Nintendo Switch in the US, EU or Australia? You don’t have it nearly as bad as Japan. Japanese Switch demand is getting so out of hand, that retailers are setting up lotteries. And they don’t even guarantee you a Switch.

Switch lines at Akihabara

Japanese Switch demand is reaching critical mass, but at least retailers are keeping things fair. In the West, stores typically operate using a first come, first serve system. Japanese stores however are giving everybody a chance to purchase a Switch – with a lottery campaign. The only problem is that you need to line up to enter that lottery.

Today, 3100 hopeful customers lined up at the Akihabara Yodobashi Camera, registered and entered the running to purchase a Nintendo Switch. As you might imagine – the lines were huge. However – there were estimates that 5000 to 10000 people may have lined up today – insane!

Of course, Japanese Twitter users waiting in line or observing kept everybody updated – describing the event as “savage”. Is this the true power of Splatoon 2?

That's a long line to Splatoon 2
